LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has announced plans to commence the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination across the state on January 20, 2026, reinforcing its drive to reduce child mortality and strengthen routine immunisation.
Speaking on Thursday, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board (LSPHCB), Dr Ibrahim Mustafa, said the exercise aligns with the state’s broader goal of providing equitable healthcare access.
“This initiative will help protect our children and improve the health of future generations,” Mustafa stated during the inauguration of the Technical Working Group on the MR Vaccine and the Quarter 3 Immunisation Review Meeting.
Dr Adetola Akinpelu, Immunisation Programme Coordinator, highlighted the working group’s crucial role, describing it as “the engine room” for implementation across the state.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Nigeria still bears one of the world’s highest measles burdens. Lagos’s proactive plan forms part of the national Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), aimed at ensuring every child is protected from measles and rubella.
