LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government will begin a full-scale crackdown on illegal land reclamation and waterfront encroachment starting Wednesday, October 15, officials announced Monday.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the enforcement follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum to violators.
“It has become imperative to act,” Wahab said. “Those reclaiming land without approval have defied repeated warnings. The grace period ended September 25 — enforcement now begins.”
The government vowed to demolish illegal structures, seize equipment, and prosecute offenders under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.
Wahab said the action aims to prevent flooding, protect the environment, and safeguard lives. He cautioned residents against buying land from unapproved operators.
“Enough is enough,” Wahab declared. “We must restore order and preserve our waterfronts for public safety and future generations.”
