LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government is urging residents to convert recyclable waste into income through its Cash for Trash initiative, part of its drive for a cleaner, greener city.
The programme, launched by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) in partnership with LAWMA, rewards residents every Thursday for submitting recyclables — plastics, cans, and bottles — at designated collection points.
Commissioner for Environment Tokunbo Wahab said in a statement: “Did you know your trash can turn into cash? It’s a win for your wallet and a win for Lagos.”
LAWMA’s recycling teams have been engaging communities across the city, demonstrating how waste can generate economic value. Officials say the initiative supports the state’s circular economy agenda and aims to curb plastic pollution.
“This project empowers residents while promoting responsible waste management,” Wahab added.
Environmental experts say the scheme could also create jobs within the recycling value chain, positioning Lagos as a model for urban sustainability in Africa.
