ABUJA, Nigeria — Katsina State is set to receive between $6 million and $8 million in fresh World Bank funding to expand the Nigeria for Women Project across all 34 local government areas, a move expected to strengthen women’s economic empowerment, financial inclusion and community resilience.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda disclosed the development while receiving officials from the World Bank, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the Nigeria for Women Project at the Katsina State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.
The governor said the state had already committed ₦4 billion as counterpart funding, describing women’s empowerment as critical to poverty reduction and economic recovery.
“I was concerned about the slow pace of implementation because Katsina fulfilled its counterpart funding obligation since last year,” Radda said.
He stressed that expanding the programme beyond the initial three benefiting councils would help women recover from the economic impact of insecurity.
He disclosed that women participating in the project had already mobilised nearly ₦192 million in savings.
“Their commitment to savings, discipline and self-reliance is the foundation of sustainable development,” he said.
“Katsina has distinguished itself as one of the leading states implementing the Nigeria for Women Project,” she said.
