KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) has issued a Lassa Fever alert, urging residents to adopt preventive hygiene measures as Nigeria enters the peak transmission season for the viral disease.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Director-General of KNCDC, Dr Muhammad Adamu Abbas, said the alert followed a national advisory from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) predicting a likely surge in infections between October and May due to changing weather and environmental conditions.
“Residents should keep their surroundings clean store food in sealed containers, and block rodent entry points,” Dr Abbas advised. “Anyone with persistent fever or symptoms should report immediately to the nearest health facility.”
The Kano State Government has activated its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) to strengthen surveillance, case management, and rapid response systems.
Dr Abbas disclosed that essential medical supplies, including personal protective equipment (PPE) and antivirals, had been pre-positioned, while health workers are receiving refresher training on infection prevention.
“Community sensitisation and rodent control exercises are ongoing in high-risk areas under our One Health strategy,” he said.
He emphasised that Lassa Fever is preventable and treatable when detected early, encouraging residents to report suspected cases promptly.
“Together, we can keep Kano safe and free from Lassa Fever this season,” Dr Abbas added.
