KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Hisbah Board has banned the mobile movie downloading business across all 44 local government areas, saying the activity promotes the distribution of films and videos that violate Islamic principles, cultural values and public morality.
The Acting Commander-General of the board, Mujahid Aminuddeen, announced the directive on Wednesday, describing it as part of renewed efforts to protect young people and uphold moral standards in the state.
In a voice message issued to journalists, Aminuddeen says investigations by the board reveal that operators of the mobile movie downloading business circulate content considered offensive to religion, local traditions and acceptable moral conduct.
“Our findings show that this business contributes to the spread of films and videos that contain content contrary to religion, our culture and good morals. That is why we have decided to stop the business to protect young people from moral decay and reduce the circulation of harmful content,” he says.
The Hisbah chief directs operators to halt the business immediately, warning that anyone found violating the order will face prosecution.
“We are calling on all operators of this business to comply with this directive. Anyone caught violating the ban will face the full weight of the law,” Aminuddeen adds.
He says enforcement will be carried out across the state’s 44 local government areas and urges residents to support the board by reporting operators who continue the business despite the ban.
The Kano State Hisbah Board has in recent years implemented several measures aimed at promoting public morality and discouraging activities it considers harmful to the social and moral well-being of residents.
