Lagos Gives Illegal Occupants Seven Days to Vacate Hospital, School Corridors

LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to illegal occupants, traders and operators of makeshift structures encroaching on setbacks around public institutions, warning that enforcement will commence after the deadline.

The directive was issued on Monday by the General Manager of the Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority (LASISMA), Mr. Daisi Osho, during the launch of an enforcement campaign at the perimeter of the newly constructed Ojo General Hospital along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

Osho said the affected persons include roadside traders, makeshift stall owners and other informal operators occupying spaces reserved for public infrastructure.

According to him, those operating around hospitals, schools and other government facilities must dismantle their structures and vacate designated corridors within seven days or face enforcement.

While describing the current exercise as a sensitisation campaign, Osho said strict enforcement would begin immediately after the expiration of the notice.

“The exercise marks the commencement of a statewide campaign against the widespread abuse of public infrastructure setbacks, beginning with the encroachment around the newly constructed Ojo General Hospital,” he said.

He noted that LASISMA’s statutory responsibility includes regulating informal business activities and protecting road setbacks, rail corridors and other public spaces from illegal occupation.

Osho stressed that the government was not opposed to legitimate businesses but insisted such activities must be conducted in officially designated markets and commercial areas.

He also lamented indiscriminate waste disposal around the hospital, describing it as a threat to public health and the environment.

According to him, the enforcement campaign will gradually extend to other government institutions and public infrastructure across Lagos as part of efforts to restore urban order.

He urged residents and business operators to comply with regulations governing the use of public spaces, warning that illegal encroachment would no longer be tolerated.
