KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Government has begun validating its Strategic Oxygen Scale-Up Plan to ensure every health facility across the state has reliable access to medical oxygen, a critical lifeline in emergency and maternal care.
The initiative, led by the State Ministry of Health, was unveiled at a validation meeting in Kaduna, bringing together government officials, health experts, and development partners, including the World Bank, UNICEF, and Gavi.
The Commissioner for Health,Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, said the exercise aligns with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s health reform agenda to reduce preventable deaths and strengthen emergency response.
“Our goal is to ensure no patient dies due to oxygen shortage,” Dr. Labaran stated. “This strategy provides a roadmap for sustainable production, equitable access, and stronger health infrastructure.”
Participants reviewed plans for oxygen generation plants, technical training, equipment maintenance, and data-driven monitoring systems. The framework also seeks to improve funding and accountability for oxygen delivery at both primary and secondary healthcare levels.
Health experts noted that dependable oxygen supply is crucial to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and lowering maternal and child mortality rates.
Development partners hailed Kano’s initiative as a model of subnational health leadership, citing its data-based planning and strong political commitment.
The final validated document will guide future investments, ensuring that affordable, high-quality oxygen becomes available across the state’s hospitals and clinics.
