Kano Governor, Abba Yusuf
KANO, Nigeria – Kano State is set to present its first-ever ₦1 trillion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, following the conclusion of a special State Executive Council session held to finalise the proposal.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday by Director-General, Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
“Our administration has strengthened internal revenue mechanisms and sealed leakages, which now allows us to plan boldly for transformative projects in 2026,” the governor said at the opening of the Second Special Executive Council meeting. Officials attribute the unprecedented budget size to improved internally generated revenue and stricter fiscal controls.
Governor Yusuf told council members that the state’s fiscal improvements have created room to expand capital investment without undermining financial discipline. The proposed budget prioritises critical sectors including housing, agriculture, healthcare, education and support for small and medium enterprises—areas the government says will generate jobs and broaden economic opportunities.
According to Dawakin Tofa, the budget is designed to enhance inclusive infrastructure and strengthen social investment. “This budget targets development that directly improves living standards across Kano State,” he said.
Once submitted, the over ₦1 trillion appropriation bill will undergo legislative scrutiny by the Kano State House of Assembly. If passed, it will become the largest budget ever presented by a northern Nigerian state.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and timely implementation. He assured residents that all funded projects will be closely monitored to ensure value for money and efficient delivery of services.
