ABUJA, Nigeria – Police in India have arrested a Nigerian woman and a taxi driver after allegedly recovering 3.6 kilogrammes of heroin during a security operation in Tarn Taran district.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by NDLEA spokesperson, Mr. Femi Babafemi, the suspects were arrested near the Goindwal bypass on the Amritsar-Bathinda highway following intelligence gathered by the CIA Staff in Tarn Taran.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Surender Lamba, says officers intercepted a grey taxi during the operation conducted under the supervision of Inspector Rupinderpal Singh.
Police identify the Nigerian suspect as Bela, described as a native of Delta State currently residing in Delhi, alongside taxi driver Dalip Kumar from Noida in Uttar Pradesh.
Authorities say a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 3.6 kilograms of heroin, a mobile phone and cash suspected to be proceeds from drug trafficking.
Lamba alleges that the taxi driver assisted the suspect in transporting the narcotics for financial gain.
Preliminary investigations, according to police, indicate that the suspect may be linked to an international drug trafficking network allegedly connected to smugglers operating across the India-Pakistan border.
Police claim the heroin consignments were intended for distribution in Punjab, Delhi and other Indian states.
“A case has been registered against the accused under Section 21-C of the NDPS Act at City Tarn Taran police station,” Lamba says.
The arrest follows several recent drug-related cases involving Nigerian nationals in India, including alleged cocaine and MDMA trafficking investigations earlier this year.
Indian authorities say investigations into the alleged trafficking network are continuing.
