Igbeti Military Camp Attack: Oyo Arrests Five Suspects as 120 Soldiers Hunt Attackers

LAGOS, Nigeria – The Oyo State Government says five suspected terrorists have been arrested following an attack on a military camp on the outskirts of Igbeti in Olorunsogo Local Government Area.
The government also said about 120 soldiers had been deployed into the bush to track the fleeing attackers.
Oyo State Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, disclosed this on Monday during a visit to the scene to assess the situation and reassure residents.
“You will never be abandoned,” Lawal told the people, according to a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade.
Lawal was conducted round the scene by the Commanding Officer of the 81 Battalion, Lt. Col. Innocent Asogwa, who briefed him on the attack and ongoing efforts to apprehend those responsible.
The state government said five suspects had also been arrested wearing military uniforms, while more arrests were expected.
Asogwa explained that the fire which destroyed the building and an operational vehicle was triggered by grenade launchers used by the attackers.
He said the explosions caused cooking gas cylinders at the premises to explode.
Oyo Defends Security Surveillance
Addressing concerns over the state’s surveillance aircraft, Lawal said the newly procured aircraft were operational and regularly deployed for random sorties and reconnaissance.
He said the aircraft could not remain permanently in the sky but would be deployed for security operations and intelligence gathering when required.
Lawal also announced the creation of an emergency committee covering Olorunsogo, Oriire, Saki East, Orelope and Irepo local government areas.
“As a responsible government, we will continue to play our part in ensuring that our people are safe,” Lawal said.
