King’s College Crisis: FG Assures Staff of No Dismissals as TUC Suspends Industrial Action

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has assured staff of King’s College, Lagos, that no worker will be dismissed or punished over the ongoing arrangement for the school’s Old Boys Association to continue managing the institution.
The assurance was given by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, after a high-level meeting with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other stakeholders to address concerns raised over the management arrangement.
Alausa said the deployment of academic and non-academic staff would continue to be guided by the Public Service Rules.
The committee comprises two representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, including the Minister of State for Education and the Acting Permanent Secretary; one representative of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment; two senior representatives of the TUC; and two representatives of the King’s College Old Boys Association.
The committee has between one and two weeks to complete its assignment.
Alausa said implementation of the management arrangement would proceed while the committee reviews the outstanding issues.
“No staff would be dismissed,” the minister assured, adding that no member of staff would be demonised or punished because of the issues surrounding the school.
Following the meeting, TUC General Secretary, Comrade Nuhu Toro, announced the suspension of the industrial action earlier directed against its affiliates.
Toro said the suspension would allow the committee to carry out its assignment, while the unions retained the option of resuming the action if necessary.
The TUC general secretary also welcomed the establishment of the committee, saying it would give the unions an opportunity to examine the relevant policy document and make further contributions before the parties reconvened.
