GOMBE, Nigeria – The Gombe State Government has banned private schools from compelling parents to buy non-reusable customised notebooks and textbooks, describing the practice as exploitative.
Director of Quality Assurance in the Ministry of Education, Saidu Dauda Gadam, announced the decision in a statement on Friday, clarifying that textbooks with built-in worksheets or answer spaces will no longer be allowed. Schools must ensure textbooks remain reusable and provide optional exercise books.
“Parents and guardians must be given the choice to buy learning materials, whether in schools or in the open market. This includes textbooks, uniforms, and writing items,” the statement noted.
The Education Commissioner, Dr Aishatu Umar Maigari, also outlawed “sign-out” ceremonies, except for pupils completing Primary Six, JSS III, and SSS III, citing unruly conduct during previous events.
The government further suspended registration and establishment of new private, community, and faith-based schools. Existing schools must finalise their approval processes by 31 October 2025.
Authorities reminded school owners to align with official policies, adopt the new curriculum, promote skill-based learning, and enforce anti-bullying measures. Institutions without WAEC or NECO centres must seek guidance from the ministry.
Officials say the reforms aim to protect parents from exploitation and improve educational standards.
