ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) will begin a fresh nationwide crackdown on fake, covered, defaced and obsolete vehicle number plates on Monday as part of efforts to strengthen road safety and address security concerns.

The five-day operation code-named ‘Operation Guduma Phase Two’, will run from November 2 to November 6, according to a statement issued on Saturday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri. Ohaeri said the exercise, approved by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, would cover selected states, with designated senior officers deployed to coordinate and supervise enforcement.

He said the second phase followed the first operation conducted in May 2026, which resulted in 1,691 arrests across 11 states. Of those arrested, 1,003 motorists were apprehended for number plate-related offences, 683 for overloading and mixed-loading, while five people were arrested for using fake diplomatic number plates.

The FRSC said the latest operation was prompted partly by concerns raised by the Office of the National Security Adviser over the increasing use of counterfeit and improperly displayed vehicle registration plates.

It warned that the misuse of number plates had security implications because road transport remained central to the movement of people and goods across the country. The corps said the renewed enforcement was intended to deter violations and improve compliance with vehicle registration requirements.
