ABUJA, Nigeria – The 2027 WAEC NECO fee review has been suspended as the Federal Government puts planned registration fee adjustments on hold pending wider consultations with education stakeholders.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Federal Ministry of Education says it has withdrawn an earlier communication issued on June 18, 2026, proposing changes to registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination.
The ministry says the decision follows public feedback and reflects the government’s commitment to developing education policies through an inclusive and transparent process.
Officials explain that the proposed fee review was driven by rising costs associated with conducting national examinations, including logistics, security, printing, technology, quality assurance and other operational expenses required to maintain examination integrity.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directs that the 2027 WAEC NECO fee review be suspended until extensive consultations are completed with examination bodies, state ministries of education, school owners, parents, organised labour and other stakeholders.
The ministry says the consultations are expected to produce a balanced decision that addresses the increasing cost of conducting public examinations while ensuring that education remains affordable and accessible for Nigerian students.
It stresses that no increase in registration fees will take effect until the consultation process has been concluded and a final decision announced.
The ministry also reassures Nigerians that students’ welfare and equal access to quality education remain central to the Federal Government’s education policy.
In a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the ministry pledges to keep the public informed as consultations progress.
