ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government will launch the Digital National Education Information Management System (DNEMIS) on Wednesday after registering more than 32 million Nigerian students on the platform, marking one of the country’s largest education data initiatives.
Officials say the DNEMIS education platform will create a unified digital database for students, schools, teachers and education infrastructure nationwide to improve planning, budgeting and policy decisions.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday, the National Project Coordinator of the Special Programmes Operations and Implementation Unit in the Office of the Minister of Education, Adebayo Onigbanjo, said the platform forms the foundation of the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure.
According to him, Nigeria’s education sector has suffered for years from fragmented records, inconsistent reporting and weak access to credible data, limiting effective planning and investment.
“The data already collected from over 32 million students is helping us understand where learners are located, how they progress through the education system and where many eventually drop out,” he said.
Onigbanjo described education data as a strategic national asset capable of improving governance, transparency and accountability throughout the sector.
He said the platform would also help authorities address Nigeria’s out-of-school children crisis by identifying learning gaps and directing interventions to areas of greatest need.
The long-term objective, he added, is to monitor learners from enrolment to graduation, allowing policymakers to make evidence-based decisions and improve learning outcomes.
Addressing concerns over privacy, Onigbanjo said the system was built using internationally recognised digital architecture with robust safeguards for personal information.
National Coordinator of NEDI, Abubakar Isah, said the platform complies with Nigerian data protection regulations and international security standards.
Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the Minister of Education on Digital Communications and E-Learning, Mojoyin Adebajo, described DNEMIS as a major milestone in the digital transformation of Nigeria’s education sector.
