ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has warned motorists against using vehicles without valid number plates, deliberately faded or concealed plates, and fake diplomatic registration numbers.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi.
The police said vehicles with concealed, invalid or fake registration plates posed security concerns because criminals could use them to evade identification and arrest.
“The Federal Capital Territory is a peculiar environment where the use of such vehicles poses significant security concerns, as it may hinder effective identification and tracking by law enforcement agencies,” the statement said.
The command specifically warned against the use of fake diplomatic number plates and diplomatic plates by unauthorised persons in the FCT.
It also directed officers across the territory to intensify enforcement and ensure compliance with laws governing vehicle registration and licensing.
Sanusi warned that motorists found violating the law would be arrested and prosecuted under applicable legislation.
However, he directed officers to conduct enforcement operations professionally and not use the exercise as an opportunity for extortion.
The police urged residents to cooperate with the enforcement exercise, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.
The command also asked residents to report suspicious vehicles or activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08028940883.
