ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announces that Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, will be fully closed from March 2026 for a 22-month rehabilitation and expansion project.
FAAN says the closure is necessary to modernise one of Nigeria’s busiest international terminals and significantly enhance passenger capacity and safety standards.
To minimise disruption, FAAN is constructing an 8,000-square-metre temporary departure terminal, now more than 90 per cent complete, to handle international departures during the shutdown.
Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, says five to six international airlines will initially operate from the temporary facility.
“Passengers should arrive earlier than usual once operations commence at the temporary terminal,” Kuku advises.
She confirms that international arrivals and cargo operations will continue uninterrupted, using existing airport infrastructure.
The project includes a new skywalk linking Terminals 1 and 2, expanded apron space for wide-body aircraft, and a redesigned road network to improve traffic flow.
FAAN says the upgrade is aimed at transforming MMIA into a modern aviation hub capable of supporting Nigeria’s growing air travel demand and improving passenger experience.
