ENUGU, Nigeria – Teachers in Enugu State on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest demanding the immediate rescue of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oyo State, warning that rising insecurity is threatening education across Nigeria.
Members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) marched to the Enugu State Government House carrying placards with messages including “Protect Teachers, Protect Education” and “Schools Must Remain Safe for Learning.”
The demonstration followed a directive from the union’s national leadership aimed at drawing attention to increasing attacks on schools and education workers nationwide.
Addressing journalists during the protest, Enugu NUT Chairman, Comrade Theophilus Odo, described the growing insecurity in schools as deeply alarming.
“We are appealing to authorities to act swiftly and ensure the unconditional release of the victims. Schools are meant to be safe spaces for learning, not places of fear,” Odo said.
He stressed that teachers and learners should not have to fear for their safety while carrying out educational activities.
According to Odo, the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State has heightened anxiety among educators across the country and underscored the urgent need for stronger security measures.
He urged federal, state and local governments to prioritise school safety and strengthen efforts to secure the release of those still in captivity.
The protesters were received by the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Professor Chidi Onyia, who represented Governor Peter Mbah.
Onyia commended the teachers for conducting a peaceful demonstration and assured them that their concerns would be conveyed to the governor and relevant authorities.
The protest forms part of a nationwide campaign by the NUT to draw attention to persistent attacks on schools and advocate stronger protection for teachers and students.
