ABUJA, Nigeria – The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on churches nationwide to lead by example in tackling mental health challenges through compassion, education, and inclusivity.
Speaking at the National Mental Health Summit in Abuja on Friday, CAN President, Rev. Daniel Okoh urged churches, government, and civil society to unite against stigma and promote early intervention.
“The Church must invest in training counselors and offer psychological support alongside spiritual care,” Okoh said. “Mental illness is not a lack of faith but a real health condition.”
He cited Galatians 6:2, urging Christians to “carry each other’s burdens” by supporting those in distress.
Okoh also appealed for greater government funding and the integration of mental health care into primary health systems to ensure community access.
“The media must report mental health issues with empathy, not sensationalism,” he added.
Organisers described the summit as “the start of a national movement” to build awareness and create safe spaces for people struggling with mental health conditions.
