CALABAR, Nigeria – The Calabar hospital collapse has raised fresh concerns over erosion and infrastructure safety after a hospital building reportedly gave way following a landslide caused by heavy rainfall in Cross River State.
The incident occurs on Friday after persistent rainfall reportedly washes away the soil beneath the structure, leaving the building suspended before it collapses into a nearby gully.
Videos shared on social media platform X capture the moment the building gradually gives way and crashes into the erosion site, prompting widespread concern among residents and online users.
The affected facility is identified as UNICEM Hospital in Calabar, Cross River State.
As of the time of filing this report, the Cross River State Government has not issued an official statement confirming the extent of the damage or whether there were casualties.
The incident sparks widespread reactions on X, with users calling for urgent action to address erosion and strengthen infrastructure safety across the state.
An X user, @Dacolls1, attributes the incident to an environmental crisis.
“It seems there is a real environmental crisis in Calabar. The recurring landslides need proper investigation from professionals at this point, but I think the lack of control of erosion is the main cause here.”
Another user, @okafor_nna54, expresses concern over possible casualties.
“Hope no casualty? Because that’s the most important thing. Right now, the governments are not doing what they’re supposed to do to save lives because this building will be showing signs and nothing was done about it.”
A third user, @Northernigbo, questions the quality of construction.
“Things like this I guess the first person I’m locking up is the engineer.”
The Calabar hospital collapse has renewed calls for authorities to strengthen erosion control measures, inspect vulnerable infrastructure and improve environmental management to reduce the risk of similar incidents in flood-prone communities.
