UMUAHIA, Nigeria – Abia State First Lady, Mrs Priscilla Chidinma Otti, has called for collective action against breast cancer, urging communities, health professionals, and government agencies to intensify awareness, screening, and support for affected women.
Speaking on Friday at the 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Week in Umuahia, Mrs Otti — represented by Mrs Adaeze Emetu, wife of the Deputy Governor — described breast cancer as “a major public health challenge that demands unity, compassion, and consistent education.”
The event was organised by the Safe Tent Care Initiative in collaboration with the Abia State Ministry of Health, with focus on early detection and community-level support.
“Regular screening and timely intervention save lives,” Mrs Otti said. “We must sustain awareness campaigns and strengthen support systems for patients and survivors.”
She praised breast cancer survivors for their resilience, describing them as “symbols of courage whose stories inspire hope.”
Mrs Otti also honoured women who have lost their lives to the disease, noting that “breast cancer affects families across all backgrounds — no one is exempt.”
The programme concluded with a call for better diagnostic capacity, affordable treatment and continuous public education across Abia and neighbouring states.
