KANO, Nigeria – Police in Kano State have arrested a suspected arms dealer and recovered three fabricated AK-47 rifles during a targeted security operation in Dala Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad on Friday, also led to the seizure of ammunition, knives and other security items allegedly linked to criminal activities.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Kano State Police Command spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the suspect was intercepted around Dandinshe Quarters while driving a tinted Honda Accord vehicle.
Police identified the suspect as Umar Danladi Usman, 35, from the Kurna Layin Masallacin Juma’a area of Kano.
Security operatives say a search of the suspect and the vehicle uncovered three fabricated AK-47 rifles, five live cartridges, one empty AK-47 shell, three jack knives, a pair of jungle boots and a suspected fake police identity card.
“The operation led to the interception and arrest of one Umar Danladi Usman,” the statement says.
Police add that the suspect allegedly confessed to procuring the weapons from Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area in Katsina State.
“He is currently in police custody, and a discreet investigation is ongoing to apprehend his accomplices and dismantle the supply network,” the command states.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commends the operatives for what he describes as professionalism and bravery during the sting operation.
Bakori says the arrest demonstrates the impact of intelligence-led policing and ongoing reforms aimed at tackling illegal arms trafficking, kidnapping and violent crimes across the state.
The police urge residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with credible intelligence to strengthen public safety.
