OYO, Nigeria – A deadly encounter with a wild elephant leaves one man dead and another missing in Oyo State, triggering panic in a rural community.
Police confirm that Ibrahim Tijani died after sustaining severe injuries during the attack in Innayin community, Oke Ogun area.
“The victim was found with injuries consistent with an animal attack,” says police spokesperson Olayinka Ayanlade.
Authorities say officers, alongside local hunters and vigilantes, respond swiftly after receiving a distress call and recover the body in a nearby bush.
The remains are transferred to the General Hospital in Iwere-Ile for examination.
Search teams continue efforts to locate a second victim, Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, who is reported missing after encountering the same animal.
“Intensive efforts are underway to find him,” Ayanlade adds.
Residents are urged to avoid the affected area and report any sightings of the elephant.
The incident highlights growing concerns over human-wildlife conflict in rural communities.
Officials say the situation is under control as search and containment efforts continue.
