ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has approved a ₦70,000 transport intervention for workers across all levels for six months from November 2026, following a conciliation meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The agreement was reached on Tuesday, at a meeting convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja to address demands raised by organised labour.
The government also approved the payment of peculiar allowance arrears dating from 1 May 2026, with the outstanding amounts scheduled to be paid in three equal monthly installments beginning in November. However, both parties failed to agree on the effective date for implementing the national minimum wage. They agreed that the Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee would be constituted and begin work immediately.
The resolutions were contained in a statement issued by the ministry after the meeting, chaired by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi. NLC President Joe Ajaero led the labour delegation. On the transport intervention, the statement said the Federal Government “will pay a transport intervention of Seventy Thousand Naira (₦70,000) across all levels for a period of six (6) months, commencing from November 2026.”
The statement did not clarify whether the ₦70,000 represents a monthly payment to each eligible worker or the total amount payable over the six-month period. That distinction is important for determining the value of the intervention to individual workers.
The government also committed to clearing 19 months of outstanding allowances for health workers within three months from December 2026. On hazard allowances for agricultural workers, the ministry said the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security had submitted the list of beneficiaries and the associated costs to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) for verification.
