LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigerian technology firm Newdigit has launched a clean energy solution delivering electricity, medical oxygen, and clean water to Lagos hospitals.
The initiative, supported by the Powering Healthcare Innovation Fund, tackles the hospitals’ reliance on diesel generators and unstable grid power.
In a statement on Monday, Co-founder and CEO, Derick Nwasor explained that the “Just Add Water” system combines solar power with Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology to produce electricity, oxygen, and water onsite. “Hospitals endure daily power cuts of up to 10 hours. This system powers equipment, supplies oxygen, and recovers clean water,” Nwasor said.
The technology, already deployed in three hospitals, generates 15 kW of electricity, up to 40 litres of oxygen daily, and a steady water supply. It is projected to serve 24,000 patients annually, cut 150 tonnes of emissions, and generate 274 MWh of clean energy in its first year.
Co-founder, Joy Princess said the company targets 1,000 hospitals nationwide by 2030.
The project, supported with a $50,000 grant, showcases renewable energy’s role in health resilience.
Senior Energy Officer at SEforALL, Charlie Knight, said: “This demonstrates how clean technologies can revolutionise healthcare in Africa.”
