LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) issues a stern warning against assaults on its enforcement officers, vowing to prosecute individuals who attack or harass personnel performing statutory duties.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, describes recent incidents as unacceptable, noting a growing pattern of hostility during enforcement operations across the metropolis.
“Our officers are deployed to protect public health and enforce environmental standards. Violence or intimidation against LAWMA officials will be met with the full force of the law,” Gbadegesin says.
He explains that enforcement activities are legally backed by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, which empowers officers to ensure compliance with waste disposal regulations.
Gbadegesin urges residents to cooperate with enforcement teams rather than resort to confrontation, stressing that proper waste management remains critical to disease prevention and environmental sustainability.
He also calls on community leaders, market associations and transport unions to support LAWMA’s operations and promote lawful engagement.
Residents are encouraged to report environmental violations through official channels, rather than obstructing officers on duty.
LAWMA reiterates its commitment to what it terms “firm but fair enforcement”, while prioritising the safety of its personnel and strengthening public engagement.
The authority says its long-term goal remains the delivery of a cleaner, safer and healthier Lagos for all residents.
