JIGAWA, Nigeria – At least 18 people are killed when two Volkswagen saloon cars collide with a tipper truck at Danmasara village along the Dutse–Kwanar Huguma Road in Jigawa State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirms that 20 persons are involved in the crash, with only the tipper driver and his assistant surviving with injuries. The accident occurred at about 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
FRSC spokesperson Yahaya Ibrahim says rescue teams evacuate the injured and deceased to Dutse General Hospital. “The crash was caused by speeding, a tyre burst and subsequent loss of control,” Ibrahim says.
According to the FRSC, preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed, combined with tyre failure, leads to the fatal pile-up.
The accident comes just days after another deadly crash on the Ringim–Sankara–Beguwa Road, where 11 people died and 12 others were injured under similar circumstances.
Road safety officials warn motorists against speeding, overloading and neglecting routine vehicle maintenance, particularly during the festive travel period.
They urge drivers to conduct proper tyre checks and observe speed limits to reduce road fatalities across the state.
