Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has issued a strong condemnation of the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, warning that the disruption poses a significant threat to democratic stability across West Africa.
In a Thursday statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigerian authorities describe the action as an unconstitutional seizure of power that violates ECOWAS protocols designed to prevent undemocratic changes of government. Officials state that the development risks reversing the democratic gains achieved in Guinea-Bissau over the past decade.
The ministry expresses concern for detained government officials and international observers caught up in the political crisis. Nigeria urges the military actors to guarantee their safety, dignity and humane treatment during the ongoing instability.
Authorities insist that the situation must be resolved through dialogue-driven, constitutional processes. “Military force cannot override civilian authority or the democratic choices of Guinea-Bissau’s citizens,” the statement says, emphasising the regional implications of allowing unconstitutional actions to go unchallenged.
Nigeria confirms that it will work closely with ECOWAS and the African Union to restore order, stressing that the coup plotters could face regional sanctions if they refuse to return the country to constitutional rule.
Officials reiterate Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to supporting democratic governance, stability and peaceful conflict resolution across Africa. The government frames the Guinea-Bissau crisis as a test of regional resolve and the collective commitment to uphold democratic norms in West Africa.
