US President Donald Trump
ABUJA, Nigeria – United States President Donald Trump has declared Nigeria a “country of particular concern” over allegations of widespread persecution and targeted killings of Christians in the country.
Trump made the declaration in a statement posted on his Truth Social platform on Friday, referencing what he described as “ongoing religious violence and genocide allegations.”
The designation—commonly used under U.S. foreign policy to highlight severe violations of religious freedom—could influence advocacy pressure, diplomatic discussions, and aid-related decisions if adopted by U.S. lawmakers or federal agencies.
Although Nigeria has long faced conflicts involving armed groups, extremist factions, bandits, and communal militias, Trump’s statement revives global debate over whether the violence is religious, ethnic, or criminally driven.
The Nigerian government has not yet responded to the statement.
This is a developing story.
