Governor Radda launching Katsina digital birth registration programme
KATSINA, Nigeria – Katsina State has launched a statewide digital birth registration programme designed to ensure that every child is formally identified from birth and able to access essential services.
The initiative was announced on Friday in a statement by the spokesperson to the Governor, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed.
Flagging off the programme in Katsina, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described digital birth documentation as “a decisive step toward protecting every child’s rights.”
“Birth registration is the first legal recognition of identity,” he said. “No child should live unseen or uncounted.”
Under the new system, ward and village heads across all 34 Local Government Areas will serve as permanent registration centres, ensuring community accessibility. The governor added that birth certificates would soon be required when accessing core public services, including school enrolment.
NPC Director-General, Dr Kelsen Osifo Ojogun, said the platform offers real-time, secure, and tamper-proof data that integrates with national identity databases.
UNICEF Chief of Field Office, Rahama Rihood Mohammed Farah, said the model has already enabled more than 566,000 registrations in 2025, up from 180,901 in 2021, ensuring each child receives a National Identification Number or tracking ID.
