ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) warns residents of heavy rainfall and possible flash floods across several states between Monday and Wednesday, urging the public to take safety precautions.
In its weather outlook issued on Sunday, NiMet forecasts thunderstorms and heavy rains over southern states including Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Lagos, and Ogun. Central states such as the FCT, Nasarawa, and Kogi will experience cloudy skies and isolated thunderstorms, while northern areas are expected to remain sunny with light dust haze.
“The southern region will see cloudy mornings followed by thunderstorms and moderate rains later in the day,” NiMet stated.
NiMet further cautions of potential flooding in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River, calling on local authorities to activate emergency response plans. It also urges motorists to drive cautiously and advises asthma and respiratory patients to limit outdoor exposure due to dust particles.
“Residents should monitor updates and adhere to safety advisories to minimise the impact of heavy rainfall,” the agency added.
Airline operators are also advised to obtain location-specific weather reports for safe flight operations.
