Kano Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Government is intensifying its grassroots war against drug abuse, urging all 44 local government chairmen to take the lead in curbing the rising menace across their communities.
Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Musa Kwankwaso, made this call during a training programme organised by the Kano Reformatory Centre on Sunday.
“Confronting this menace requires a coordinated, community-based approach,” Gwarzo said. “Local governments must mobilise and lead efforts to protect our youth and families.”
He warned that drug abuse is more than a public health issue—it also fuels crime, poverty, and social decay. “This administration is determined to strengthen community structures and ensure safer neighbourhoods,” he added.
Coordinator of the Kano Reformatory Centre, Mrs Cheryl Aminta Kwagga, revealed that over 3,500 clients are undergoing rehabilitation, with expansion plans across all senatorial districts.
She noted, “Drug abuse continues to erode our values, destroy families, and cripple youth potential. This training equips chairmen to respond effectively.”
Gwarzo reaffirmed the state government’s support for initiatives that promote rehabilitation, awareness, and youth empowerment, under the theme ‘United Against Drug Abuse: A Community-Based Strategy’.
