German Ambassador, Annett Günther
ABUJA, Nigeria – Trade between Nigeria and Germany has surged by 30 per cent to €3 billion, driven by stronger collaboration in energy, security, and investment, according to the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Günther.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday ahead of the Nigeria–Germany Binational Commission meeting in Berlin, Günther said Nigeria remains Germany’s second-largest trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa.
“Trade volumes have increased by 30% due to Nigeria’s economic recovery,” she said. “Nigeria continues to be a key strategic and economic partner to Germany.”
Günther disclosed that more than 90 German companies operate in Nigeria, creating over 17,000 indirect jobs across manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and energy.
She announced that the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) with Siemens has entered its second phase, expected to add seven gigawatts to the national grid and expand cooperation in gas flaring reduction.
On migration, Günther said over 7,600 visas were issued last year, including 1,400 long-term study and work permits.
“We aim to strengthen people-to-people ties through transparent and legal migration channels,” she added.
The ambassador highlighted Germany’s continued support for counterterrorism and stabilization efforts in northern Nigeria, noting joint training, counter-IED operations, and reconstruction of schools and police stations.
“Our partnership is anchored on shared prosperity and mutual growth,” she affirmed.
