SOKOTO, Nigeria – The Sokoto relief donation has exceeded ₦100 million as the state government provides financial assistance and food supplies to families affected by recent bandit attacks and the deadly Gorau boat accident in Wurno and Goronyo local government areas.
The support package, announced during separate condolence visits on Monday, includes cash payments and 408 bags of assorted food items for victims’ families in Dinawa, Birjingo and Gorau villages. The intervention comes days after one of Nigeria’s deadliest recent boat disasters claimed dozens of lives in Gorau.
A delegation led by the All Progressives Congress (APC) leader in Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, delivered the assistance on behalf of Governor Ahmed Aliyu, expressing the government’s sympathy to bereaved families and survivors.
Under the relief package, each family of the seven victims killed during the bandit attack in Dinawa received ₦1 million, alongside two bags each of maize and millet and one bag of rice. The five injured victims were given ₦250,000 each, in addition to one bag each of rice, maize and millet.
Families of the three people killed in Birjingo received the same level of support, while the six injured victims were also provided with financial assistance and food items.
The largest share of the intervention went to Gorau village, where families of the 65 victims of the recent boat accident each received ₦1 million, two bags of maize, two bags of millet and one bag of rice.
Speaking during the condolence visits, Wamakko described the incidents as tragic and prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls.
“These incidents are unfortunate. We pray Almighty Allah grants the deceased eternal rest and prevent a recurrence of such tragedies,” he said.
He also assured residents that the Sokoto State Government would continue supporting security agencies to improve safety across the state and tackle insecurity affecting rural communities.
The relief intervention follows the fatal boat accident in Gorau, where a passenger boat carrying farmers, women and children capsized shortly after departing the community. Authorities have confirmed that scores of people died in the disaster, making it one of the deadliest inland waterway accidents recorded in the state in recent years.
