NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive, Mohamed Buba Marwa
ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) supports regulated export of cannabis oil for medical and industrial use but maintains its ban on local consumption.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday at a workshop by the Nigerian Academy of Science, NDLEA Chairman, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) said the agency’s stance is based on science and public health.
“We support informed dialogue, not commercial pressure,” Marwa stated. “Cannabis oil may have medicinal benefits, but risks and misuse remain real.”
He said export could be allowed under strict licensing within free zones.
NAS President, Prof Abubakar Sambo said the meeting aimed to create an evidence-based national framework.
Experts, including Prof Oye Gureje of the WHO Collaborating Centre, warned that recreational use poses public health risks such as psychosis and road accidents.
Ondo State delegate Dr Samuel Adekola urged Nigeria to “move from debate to design” and build a regulated industry guided by evidence.
