ILORIN, Nigeria — Law officers in the Kwara State Ministry of Justice have begun an indefinite strike over unpaid allowances and the government’s failure to implement an approved salary harmonisation, disrupting legal services across the state.
The industrial action commenced on Monday after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq by the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Kwara State Chapter. In a notice signed by Acting Chairman Kehinde Ayorinde, the association directed members to withdraw all official services until the government addresses its demands.
“Please, take notice that LOAN, Kwara State Chapter, commences her indefinite strike action today… until the government responds to her demands,” Ayorinde said. The association is demanding payment of the outstanding balance of the 2020 furniture allowance, robe allowances for 2024, 2025 and 2026, and implementation of the approved harmonisation of salaries, allowances and conditions of service for state counsel with magistrates.
LOAN said previous engagements with the state government and the Office of the Head of Service, including commitments made after a three-day warning strike in October 2025, failed to produce concrete results. It stressed that state counsel play critical roles in criminal prosecution, legal advisory services, legislative drafting and revenue recovery through tax-related litigation.
The association urged the Kwara State Government to urgently resolve the dispute to prevent prolonged disruption to justice administration and legal services across the state.
