LAGOS, Nigeria — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a shipment of tramadol concealed inside black soap containers and destined for the United Kingdom, thwarting what officials described as another sophisticated international drug smuggling attempt.
The seizure was made during a routine interdiction operation in Lagos, the agency said on Sunday. Announcing the development in a narco-trend update on X, NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, warned Nigerians against accepting parcels or luggage from strangers, saying drug trafficking syndicates increasingly exploit unsuspecting individuals as couriers.
“It’s difficult not to continue to warn people that they should avoid accepting any parcel or luggage from anyone,” Babafemi wrote. Explaining the latest seizure, he added: “Here are pills of tramadol buried in black soap containers to get them to the UK, but the concealment was discovered by NDLEA officers in Lagos.”
The interception is the latest in a series of major drug seizures as the NDLEA intensifies its crackdown on trafficking networks operating within and beyond Nigeria. The agency said traffickers are adopting increasingly sophisticated concealment methods, hiding narcotics in food items, clothing, vehicle parts, religious materials and household products to evade security screening.
Tramadol, a prescription opioid frequently abused for its psychoactive effects, remains one of the most trafficked drugs in Nigeria. The NDLEA says sustained enforcement is critical to preventing the country from being used as a transit hub for international drug trafficking.
