LAGOS, Nigeria – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has returned ₦108 million recovered from an alleged corporate fraud to a Lagos-based company, while intensifying efforts to arrest all suspects linked to the case, including one believed to have fled to the United Kingdom.
The anti-graft agency announced the development on Friday, saying the recovered funds were handed over as bank drafts to the company’s legal representatives following investigations into alleged abuse of office, forgery, stealing and diversion of company funds.
According to the EFCC, investigations identified the principal suspects as Nkechi Gladys Megai, who is alleged to have escaped to the United Kingdom, and the company’s former Chief Financial Officer, Godson Eze.
The commission alleged that the suspects forged documents, created fictitious invoices using the identities of legitimate vendors and diverted company funds through a series of fraudulent transactions involving several hundreds of millions of naira.
Presenting the recovered funds, Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, Assistant Commander Bawa Usman Kaltungo, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring victims of financial crimes recover stolen assets.
“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission remains committed to ensuring that victims of economic and financial crimes obtain justice and, where possible, recover assets fraudulently obtained from them.”
Kaltungo said investigations remain ongoing and that the commission is working to bring every suspect connected with the alleged fraud before the courts, including those who have fled Nigeria.
“We will continue to pursue all individuals connected with this alleged fraud and ensure they face justice in accordance with the law.”
The EFCC said legal representatives of the affected company commended the agency for its professionalism and thorough investigation, noting that the recovered funds would help mitigate the financial losses suffered by the firm.
