ABUJA, Nigeria – Police authorities have commenced enforcement operations against motorists driving against traffic at the busy NNPC Junction along the Abuja expressway, following mounting complaints from residents and road users over the recurring violation.
Three police officers were deployed to the junction on Wednesday morning and remained stationed at the location throughout the day, monitoring traffic flow and preventing motorists from engaging in one-way driving, a practice that has become increasingly common in the area.
The intervention comes after concerns over the dangerous traffic behaviour were reported to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), which had assured that steps would be taken to address the situation.
Speaking at the scene, one of the deployed officers, Kareem Obanija, said the operation was carried out on the directive of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
“Our DPO asked us to come here after he was notified about the one-way driving, and that’s why we’re here,” Obanija said.
Residents and commuters have repeatedly expressed concerns about the growing incidence of motorists driving against traffic at the junction, warning that the practice poses a significant threat to public safety and increases the risk of accidents involving both motorists and pedestrians.
