LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government says emergency responders saved properties worth ₦118.32 billion from fire outbreaks in 2025, despite losses estimated at ₦19.72 billion across the state.
Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Olugbenga Oyerinde, disclosed the figures on Tuesday during the 2026 ministerial press briefing commemorating the seventh anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration at Alausa Secretariat.
According to the commissioner, the performance reflects improved emergency response capacity by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and allied agencies in containing disasters and limiting economic losses.
“The figures reflect the growing capacity of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency response agencies to contain fire disasters and minimise economic losses across the state,” Oyerinde said.
He revealed that the value of assets preserved exceeded recorded losses by nearly ₦98.6 billion, underscoring the effectiveness of recent investments in firefighting infrastructure and rapid emergency intervention.
March 2025 recorded the highest value of properties saved at ₦12.60 billion, while August posted the lowest at ₦6.78 billion, largely due to reduced emergency incidents during the peak rainy season.
The commissioner added that March also witnessed the highest monthly fire-related destruction at ₦2.10 billion, whereas August recorded the least losses at ₦1.13 billion.
Oyerinde disclosed that firefighters responded to 1,685 fire emergencies in 2025, accounting for the majority of incidents handled by the state’s emergency response agencies.
The Lagos government says it will continue strengthening fire prevention strategies, emergency response systems and public safety awareness to reduce casualties and property destruction in Africa’s largest commercial city.
