GUSAU, Nigeria – Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal calls for intensified military operations, warning that persistent bandit attacks are crippling farming communities across the North-West.
Lawal makes the appeal during a meeting with Chief of Defence Staff Olufemi Oluyede, stressing that residents cannot safely return to their farmlands without stronger protection.
“It is a pertinent call for intensified military support and stronger collaboration,” the governor says.
He highlights the growing humanitarian strain, noting that insecurity continues to disrupt livelihoods and food production in rural areas.
Lawal recounts a recent incident in Wanzaamai community, where residents—including women and children—blocked his convoy to protest ongoing attacks after security forces withdrew.
The governor insists Nigeria’s armed forces have the capacity to defeat criminal networks but require improved coordination, logistics and sustained operational backing.
“Our military is capable, but stronger strategic support is essential for decisive outcomes,” he adds.
Lawal urges the defence leadership to deploy additional resources to field commanders to stabilise affected communities.
He describes the defence chief’s visit as a positive step, reaffirming the state’s commitment to supporting federal security operations.
Security analysts warn that prolonged instability in farming regions could deepen food insecurity and economic hardship across the North-West.
