LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government urges residents to maintain strict environmental hygiene during the yuletide season, warning that improper waste disposal could undermine public health and safety.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, says festive celebrations typically generate increased volumes of waste across the state.
He calls on residents to sort, bag and dispose of waste responsibly at designated collection points for evacuation by accredited Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators. “Residents must be environmentally conscious, especially during this festive period when waste generation rises significantly,” Wahab says.
The commissioner assures Lagosians that the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) remains fully mobilised to ensure prompt waste evacuation throughout the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
He reiterates the state’s ban on patronising cart pushers, noting that their activities disrupt formal waste management systems and contribute to illegal dumping.
“Engaging cart pushers undermines the progress Lagos has made in waste management,” Wahab warns.
He also encourages residents to report environmental infractions, black spots and illegal dump sites through LAWMA’s customer care channels. “I appeal to all residents to promptly report any environmental infractions noticed in their communities,” he says.
Wahab further cautions against storing petrol and other inflammable materials in homes and public places, citing heightened fire risks during the dry season.
He wishes residents an environmentally responsible Christmas and a clean, prosperous New Year.
