FCT Minister Nyesom Wike inspects roadside transport activities in Abuja.
ABUJA, Nigeria – The FCT roadside trading crackdown is set to intensify as Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike warns that vehicles belonging to roadside transport operators and car dealers occupying green areas will be impounded and auctioned if they continue to violate government directives.
Wike issued the warning during an inspection tour of Abuja on Saturday, expressing frustration over what he describes as the persistent refusal of some transport operators and car dealers to comply with regulations introduced by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
According to the minister, repeated warnings have failed to produce the desired level of compliance, leaving the administration with no option but to enforce tougher sanctions.
He says some Nigerians only obey regulations when authorities take firm action.
Wike warns that the FCTA will begin impounding and auctioning vehicles belonging to defaulting transporters and car dealers operating illegally on parks, green areas and road corridors.
The minister expresses confidence that the enforcement measure will compel greater compliance and discourage others from violating the regulations.
The FCTA recently directed commercial transport operators to relocate their activities to officially commissioned bus terminals while ordering car dealers to vacate green areas and public parks across the capital city.
According to the administration, the directives form part of broader efforts to improve urban planning, reduce flooding and strengthen security within the transportation sector.
Officials say illegal occupation of green areas contributes to blocked drainage channels and environmental degradation, while roadside transport activities create security risks and traffic congestion.
The FCTA maintains that the enforcement campaign is designed to restore order in Abuja and ensure that public infrastructure is used only for approved purposes.
