ABUJA, Nigeria – The World Health Organisation (WHO) is seeking leading scientists worldwide to join its influential Science Council, one of its highest advisory bodies guiding global health research, innovation and policy.
In a statement issued on Monday, WHO invites internationally recognised experts to apply as it strengthens scientific leadership amid rapid advances in health research and emerging technologies. The Science Council, operating under the Office of the Chief Scientist, advises WHO on scientific priorities, urgent global health challenges and ethical implications of innovation.
“Scientific excellence is the backbone of effective public health,” says WHO Chief Scientist Dr Sylvie Briand. “We are calling on the world’s leading experts to shape the future of global health with WHO and translate emerging knowledge into evidence-informed solutions.”
WHO says the council will identify scientific breakthroughs, review normative health guidelines and assess ethical, social and governance implications of new technologies. Members will also guide research strategies to ensure equity and impact, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
Selected members will serve in their personal capacity, adhere to strict conflict-of-interest rules and meet at least three times annually, either in Geneva or virtually. While unpaid, WHO will cover travel and accommodation costs in line with its policies.
Applications close on 16 January 2026 at 23:59 Geneva time. Submissions must include a cover letter, a two-page CV and a declaration of interests’ form. Shortlisted candidates may be interviewed, and the names and biographies of appointed members may be published.
