LAGOS, Nigeria – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed viral claims suggesting that schools have been instructed to restrict subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a statement on Tuesday, Acting Head of Public Affairs Moyosola Adeshina clarified that the Council issued no directive limiting students’ subject combinations.
“WAEC distances itself completely from the unfounded assumption circulating online. No such directive exists,” the statement read.
The body explained that curriculum planning rests with the Federal Government, while WAEC only implements approved educational policies through examinations.
“Curriculum development is the responsibility of government. WAEC’s role is assessment. Any approved changes will be formally communicated,” the Council noted.
WAEC urged school administrators, parents, and students to rely solely on official notices.
