US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio
ABUJA, Nigeria – The United States announces its withdrawal from 66 international organisations following a comprehensive review ordered by President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio says.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, Rubio confirms that the decision follows Executive Order 14199, which mandates a review of US participation in what the administration describes as wasteful and harmful global institutions.
“Today, in furtherance of Executive Order 14199, President Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organizations,” Rubio states.
He says the review process remains ongoing and could result in additional withdrawals.
“The Trump Administration has found these institutions to be unnecessary, wasteful, poorly run, or a threat to our nation’s sovereignty,” Rubio says.
He adds that continued funding of such bodies is no longer justifiable.
“President Trump is clear: it is no longer acceptable to send the blood, sweat and treasure of the American people to institutions with little to show for it,” he says.
Rubio argues that many organisations have drifted from pragmatic cooperation to what he calls a “sprawling architecture of global governance” dominated by progressive ideology.
“From DEI mandates to climate orthodoxy, many international organizations now serve a globalist project detached from national interests,” he states.
The Secretary of State accuses these bodies of actively constraining US independence and being supported by elite multilateral networks. “We will not continue expending resources or diplomatic capital on institutions that conflict with our interests,” Rubio says.
