US donated AI powered X-ray machine for TB screening in Nigeria
ABUJA, Nigeria – The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is backing Nigeria with AI-powered X-ray machines to boost tuberculosis (TB) detection in HIV patients.
Announcing the initiative on Monday, the CDC said portable digital X-rays with artificial intelligence will “bridge diagnostic gaps” in underserved communities.
“By introducing AI-enabled X-ray screening, health workers can now detect TB cases with greater accuracy,” the CDC explained.
Tuberculosis remains a leading cause of death among people living with HIV. Nigerian experts have long struggled with early diagnosis due to poor access to tools.
The CDC stressed the new intervention would strengthen Nigeria’s battle against the dual burden of TB and HIV, offering quicker and more reliable screening.
Public health officials say the move is a “game changer” for high-risk groups across the country.
