PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria – A Rivers State High Court sentences 400-level University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) student, Damian Okoligwe, to death after finding him guilty of murdering fellow student Justina Otuene in 2023.
The verdict was delivered by Justice Chinwe Nsirim-Nwosu on Friday in Port Harcourt.
The court rules that the prosecution presents strong and consistent evidence establishing Okoligwe’s culpability. Justice Nsirim-Nwosu says the defendant’s conduct was “intentional, composed, calculated and coordinated,” affirming that the case meets the legal threshold of proof beyond reasonable doubt.
According to court proceedings, the incident occurred at Okoligwe’s residence in Mgbuoba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. The judge notes that key witness accounts and forensic findings align, leaving no contradictions significant enough to challenge the prosecution’s case.
With the conviction secured, the judge sentences Okoligwe to death by hanging in line with the state’s criminal code.
Prosecution counsel, Charles Mbaba, expresses satisfaction with the outcome. He says the ruling delivers justice and reinforces legal deterrence. “This judgment will make the soul of Justina rest in peace,” he states.
He urges young people to reject harmful behaviours and avoid choices that place them on the wrong side of the law. “It is a strong warning to young people who think shortcuts are the possible way for survival,” he adds.
The case has drawn significant public interest, reigniting national conversations about campus safety, gender-based violence and responsible behaviour among students. Rights advocates say the judgment underscores the need for preventive measures, stronger welfare systems and early-intervention support for at-risk youths.
