IFETEDO, Nigeria – Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered an immediate review of healthcare services across campuses of Osun State University following the death of a final-year student, Grace Osunlakin, whose passing sparked protests and allegations of negligence.
Osunlakin, a 400-level Criminology and Security Studies student at the Ifetedo campus, died after reportedly falling ill late Tuesday night, prompting demonstrations by students who accused the institution of failing to provide timely medical care.
Describing the incident as “painful and deeply heartbreaking,” Adeleke extended condolences to the family of the deceased, students, staff and management of the university.
In a statement issued Friday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor directed the Ministry of Education and university management to immediately assess healthcare delivery across all campuses.
“The review is aimed at strengthening emergency response mechanisms, improving medical facilities and ensuring students have timely access to quality healthcare,” the statement said.
The governor urged students and residents to remain peaceful while authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Meanwhile, Osun State University denied social media claims that the deceased was neglected at the institution’s medical centre.
University spokesperson Ademola Adesoji said preliminary findings showed Osunlakin was never taken to the university clinic on the night of the incident.
According to the university, the student had successfully participated in her final-year project defence earlier that day and showed no signs of illness while on campus.
The institution disclosed that Osunlakin had a documented history of asthma and had previously received treatment at the university health centre.
Testimonies obtained from her friend and housemate indicated that she returned from a Christian fellowship and later complained of stomach pain.
“When her condition appeared to worsen, it was decided that she should be taken to a medical facility at about 11:30 p.m.,” the university said.
